Cherry eye is a condition that affects the third eyelid of certain breeds of dogs, including bulldogs. This condition can cause the eyelid to become swollen and inflamed, which can be uncomfortable for the dog and may lead to vision problems if left untreated.
Different causes of cherry eye
There are a few different causes of cherry eye, including genetics, injury, and certain medical conditions. In bulldogs, the condition is often caused by a weakness in the ligament that holds the third eyelid in place, which allows it to prolapse or pop out of place.
Treatment for cherry eye typically involves surgery to reposition the eyelid and secure it in place. This is usually done by a veterinarian who specializes in ophthalmology. Surgery is often successful in treating cherry eye and restoring the dog's vision, but it is important to note that in some cases the condition may recur.
At Bambini Bulldogs, we take cherry eye very seriously and we do everything we can to make sure that our dogs and puppies are healthy. We conduct regular eye examinations on all of our breeding stock to check for any signs of cherry eye, and we only breed with dogs that do not have the condition.
VET Checks and care
In addition, we also work closely with veterinarians to ensure that any puppies that are born with cherry eye receive prompt treatment. We believe that preventing and treating cherry eye is essential to ensuring the health and well-being of our dogs, and we are dedicated to doing everything we can to promote the health of the bulldog breed.
We urge all bulldog owners to be aware of the risks of cherry eye and to seek prompt treatment if they notice any signs of the condition in their dog. With the right care and attention, bulldogs can live long, healthy lives and enjoy a high quality of life.

The massage procedure for temporary relief
Cherry eye is a common condition in certain breeds of dogs, including bulldogs, where the gland that produces tears in the third eyelid becomes prolapsed, or pushed out of place. This can cause irritation, inflammation, and even infection if left untreated.
One temporary fix for cherry eye is a massage procedure that can be done at home. The steps for this procedure are as follows:
-
Gently lift the prolapsed gland with a clean finger or a cotton swab, being careful not to damage the surrounding tissue.
-
Apply a small amount of lubricating eye drops or ointment to the gland to help it move more easily.
-
Gently massage the gland in a circular motion for about 30 seconds, being careful not to apply too much pressure.
-
Release the gland and allow it to return to its normal position.
-
Repeat this process several times a day until the gland returns to its normal position.
It's important to note that this is a temporary fix and for a more permanent solution it is best to consult a vet or a specialist.
It is also important to note that bambini bulldogs do health check on all of our puppies to make sure they are healthy and free of cherry eye before they go to their new homes.
